The project aims to valorize the value chain of municipal and industrial wastewater treatments in terms of circular economy and industrial symbiosis, testing solutions and technologies for closing the cycles of water resources, nutrients and sludge.
The project VALUE CE-IN aims at enhancing the entire value chain of municipal and industrial wastewater treatments with a view to the circular economy, proposing high TRL solutions and technologies (KET) for the closure of cycles such as water resource, nutrient elements and sludge, also in terms of energy optimization. In particular, the project aims to: a) implement ICT technologies to monitor on-line the treated water quality and test intelligent irrigation systems on real crops, in order to assess the agronomic effects associated with water reuse practices and demonstrate the related feasibility, safety and potential; b) to validate technologies based on the use of microalgae and on processes aimed at valorizing excess sludge such as pyrolysis, reforming and hydrothermal liquefaction, evaluating the opportunities related to the reuse of the resulting secondary raw materials (algal biomass, bio-char, bio-oils) both in the wastewater treatment chain and in other supply chains such as agro-industrial and energy supply chains; c) investigate safety aspects by monitoring some emerging and microplastic contaminants in the wastewater sector (still not currently regulated), providing analytical techniques and testing technologies for their treatment. All the aforementioned actions will contribute to the implementation of a software platform for the promotion of industrial symbiosis paths in the regional productive context, in order to pursue the closure of the cycles, promote synergies by means the exchange of secondary raw materials, technologies and energy, and develop new business models for municipal and industrial wastewater treatment sector. A punctual communication plan will guarantee the widest and most effective result dissemination.
